The communicative-aesthetic functions

Facilitating the comprehension of the lyrics, the most used means are subtitles and lettering

Prince - Sign 'O' the Times

REM - Everybody Hurts

Creating a further reading perspective of the song, generally used for dance/electro/techno music where the verbal text – if there is any – is repeated many times and thus remains extremely simple.

Radiohead - Just

Daft Punk - Revolution 909

To direct the expressivity of the song by creating a specific, guiding atmosphere. Images can bias the way the expressivity of a song is perceived, pushing its reception in the desired direction.

U.N.K.L.E. - Rabbit In Your Hedlights

Coldplay - The Hardest Part

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Although this is not the whole 13 minute song this supposedly one of the best music videos of all time. I think that is up to personal opinion, it’s alright.

Dire Straits - Money For Nothing

Dire Straits - Money For Nothing

I love the guitar rift in this song and also it has some very old graphics in the video. What a leap forward the video industry has had since this was made!

Nina Simone - Feeling Good

Nina Simone - Feeling Good

I found this video on you tube, it was a project done by a graphic design student, who was set a brief just to make a music video using only letter faces. It quite nice, and I like the song.

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever

This is I believe one of the first ever music videos ever made, so this is what started it all off! Filmed on the 30th January 1967 in Knoll Park in Sevenoaks, directed by Peter Goldman.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

I had to put this music video in, as I believe that it is the first music video I ever saw many years ago!

"Empire State of Mind" Jay-Z | Alicia Keys

Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z / Alicia Keys

The use of photos that are dropped in with the beat of this song works well, I’ve learnt recently how hard it is to get a video to work with the beat of the song. Another skill I would like to learn how to do well.

B.O.B - Nothing On You (feat Bruno Mars)

B.O.B - Nothing On You (feat Bruno Mars)

I like the collage effect used in this video.

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are

I’m not a fan of the song but the video contains the sort of graphics/animation that I’m interested in learning. What I like about this music video is the interaction between the graphics and the video footage.

Some music videos liked by Sub Rosa

I have been speaking to Shaun, one of the members of Sub Rosa. He gave me some examples of music videos he likes. This is some of them.

OK Go – Here It Goes Again

The Maccabees - Latchmere

Bloc Party - I Still Remember

The Maccabees - Toothpaste Kisses

Radiohead - The National Anthem

A Ha Take on me

This 1985 music video from A Ha (Take On Me) uses illustration combined with video footage. I’m interested in learning how to combine these things together in a film.

The Bourne Supremacy Vs James Bond's Quantum of Solace

The whole of the Bourne trilogy are epic, it's kind of James bond with out all stupid gadgetry and I think the reason that when they made the Casino Royal the team stripped it back to basics, and got rid of all the gadgetry. But where as the Bourne sagas got better and better the new Bonds failed to do this. I wanted to compare films because I really like The Bourne Supremacy the flow of the film is just edge of your seat kinda stuff, but really clever at the same time, nothing is so far fetched that you don't believe that there are people like Jason Bourne in real life. Where as the latest James Bond, The Quantum Of Solace is just rubbish, there is a complete lack of story line, probably due to the fact that it was made to be a sequel to Casino Royal (after running out of Ian Flemming's novels to set a story from). I was just generally really disappointed with The Quantum Of Solace, after Casino Royal being such a good film.
I thought that it would be good to compare the flow of the films by looking at a car chase from each.

This is film is pretty fast paced and this car chase shows the fast action, what i really like about the style of this chase are the shots from outside to inside the car, i feel they work really well and keep with the pace of the film. There's a great selection of shots and the sequencing works. compared to The Quantum Of Solace the scene just flows much better.

I know in the Bourne chase scene that the edits jump pretty quickly but in this scene i just don't think it flows as well, mainly like the complete film. It's not a terrible chase scene but from advice from a video tutor was told that its just badly edited together.

Best of 16th Raindance Film Festival Shorts

So to carry on with looking at films I rented the 'Best of 16th Raindance Film Festival Shorts' a series of short films and animations.

A Juicy Turkey - Benoit Ameil
This is a nice little film, it has all sorts of moments from comedy to suspense. the story line is pretty interesting, a wife obsessed with George Clooney! i sometimes find it hard to watch foreign films with having to read the subtitles i loose the visual aspect of what is going on, but i did enjoy this short.

Come Here Today - Simon Aboud
This short, shot in black and white, which definitely helps the theme of the film stars Rhys Evans. I liked the camera angles that were used and the extreme close-ups, they all helped to portray the film and its context well.

Making The Man - John Susman
I wasn't sure about this short, i couldn't quite tell where it was leading up until the last scene. I did like the last scene that demonstrated what good editing could do with a lot of footage.

Single Girl - Kristen Swanbaeck
I didn't really get this film, it ended and i was just puzzled cuz i expected more.

Alfie Is Go - Joe Godard & Tom Cerroni
Rocket Man Alfie! This documentary follows Alfie, a man who is attempting to build a prototype flying saucer. what I didn't like about this was the way that the karaoke was edited in to the interview, i felt that i would have liked it more if i had seen his whole response and not kept being interrupted by his singing talents.

The Facts In The Case Of Mr Hallow - Rodrigo Gudino & Vincent Marcone
I really like this short. I thought it was incredibly clever and out of all the shorts i've watched i did have to watch this a second time. The way that the films zooms in on the photo and moves around is great, can't quite figure out they did it as i was looking for obvious edit points but hardly found any, would like to know how it was done!

One Of The Last (Uno Degli Ultimo) - Paul Zinder
I couldn't watch this as the subtitles unreadable, so i had no idea what the man was saying.

A Letter To Colleen - Carolyn & Andy London
This is a bizarre little animation, about and loosing his virginity. i liked the animation style and the way in which the drawing style changes from line drawing to chalk style when the story line changes. it's a bit twisted and the story does make me think about how people would feel about moments in their lives like this one in the future.

Toyland - Jochen Alexander Freydank
I've actually seen this short before when i visited Berlin last year, at the Bahnhof. i like this short because the story shows a different element to my normal thoughts about the Nazi's rounding up the Jewish and sending them off to concentration camps. before this i didn't imagine how hard it was to try and explain to a child what was going on, and how hard it would be for them. definitely interesting seeing it from that perspective.

Taxi Driver

Directed by Martin Scorsese in 1976. Set in New York closely after the Vietnam War. Taxi Driver is one of Scorsese's landmark films. i wanted to watch a Scorsese film during this module because he tends to direct with a editors point of view as that was what he did before directing. I love taxi driver, it is a great film. what i really like about it is the slow spanning scenes, nowadays there is tendency to jump from shot to shot in quick concession, to keep the viewer occupied. i was told that it is the 3 second rule nowadays, people cant stay concentrated for longer than that and editors use quick jump shots to keep attention of the viewers.

Galdiator

I watched Gladiator as it was recommended by a site for having good editing, nominated at the oscars. this is the best part of the film, great line! My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

What is Viscom? Introduction

So the area that i want to explore more for this module is video, and possibly editing in particular. i have been doing video elective this term and also had to use video in my last module communication technology. by far this was an area that i enjoyed the most from all the things i have learnt and new to me this year. i found myself sat in the computer suites for ages engrossed in what i was doing. so how do i go about this for this module? david advised me just review some films and look at them from a editing perspective.
